This is a continuation of the discussion in the Han & Leia picture thread, I'm just kinda shifting it over here.
I saw the ET:SE on friday and I think it kinda relates to this. I have to applaud Spielberg for keeping the tweaking to fairly minimal, I was really afraid they were gonna screw everything up. I thought the part where ET was running from the guys w/ the flashlights was actually an improvement, he doesn't look like he's on a rail anymore. The only scenes that really bothered me were when Gertie comes in and starts screaming - ET gets too "jiggly" and the totally new bathtub/soda scene. I wont ruin it too much for those who havent seen it yet, but the ET there is depressing.
It kinda reminded me of the debate on these boards - when does CGI cross the line from a superior way of filmmaking to crap? Now I realize ET never relied heavily on special effects from the beginning, and perhaps thats why I dont notice it as much. Still, I think even a film like TPM could have done without a lot of the gaudy CGI.
