It is not MY experience that TPM "made it embarrassing to be a SW fan." I've never been embarrassed to be a SW fan, not even in the mid- to late-80s when it was incredibly uncool, and I know several people who became SW fans with TPM, when they weren't before.

well I'm glad that you've been fortunate in that respect. I'm from the SE fan generation, so I can't sympathize with the 80s. However I can tell you that TPM hasn't exactly made high school easy for me. Of course there are exceptions, I too have a couple friends who became semi-fans with TPM. The majority of the people I know already view Star Wars as pandering to younger children. Nsync will only worsen it, regardless of how insignificant their role is.

I have been a fan since 1977. 25 years of fanhood has made me a die hard fan!!! I got in line for all three SE first showings as well as TPM. And will for Clones. I prefer the original three but still watch the others and look forwards to the 16th. I personally feel that the inclusion of Nsync into the movie is nothing more than a father pleasing his daughters. It was a one day news deal and I haven't heard or seen anything more about it except here. I can understand how upsetting it can be for fans to think that George has sold out to grab the teen audiance, but they would come with or without Nsync. When I skipped work to go to the midnight shows there were all ages in that theater. Die hard fans from the 77 error all the way to young children who had probally never seen the original. The movies stand on their own and will again. I plan to attend the first show again and am going as a die hard 1977 fan to see how this episode fits into the big picture. Sorry I ranted and raved but well its only my opinion and you can like it or not. Thank you for reading this.

Oh Shelley! You are my people!
I entered high school the year Return of the Jedi was released. I spent the next four years being teased and ridiculed because I still adored Star Wars. I've been a die-hard fan since 1978 and it's only grown. I doubt Matrix fans will be as faithful after the third film comes out.
Star Wars endures because it is Star Wars. And frankly, I loved TPM. Saw it 16 times in the theaters. (16 = the times I saw the OT in the theaters, non-SE. I'm weird.) 8)

starwarsfan: I said this on the previous page, but I'll repeat it. The cameo was NOT Lucas' idea, and his daughters had nothing to do with it. The cameo was Rick McCallum's idea. The N'Syncers visited the set and talked about what great SW fans they were, and asked Rick if they could have a cameo. He said yes.
Do I agree with Rick's decision? I neither agree nor disagree with it. The non-speaking cameo is small and inconsequential, and may not even end up in the final movie, so I really believe that to get all worked up over it amounts to crying over spilt milk.
This is not to say I'm a Lucas-worshipper. He's done some stuff with SW I don't like at all--for instance, some of the SE changes/additions. I absolutely HATE "Greedo shooting first" and Luke's girly scream in ESB. I'm frankly mad at Lucas for putting those changes in. I also think the podrace in TPM was overextended, and that Jar Jar's antics should've been toned down a bit, though I do not think he was nearly as awful as the press and some fans say he is. He was annoying, but he was supposed to be--note that no one in the movie likes him, and everyone treats him like the pest he is.
But I digress. The point I am trying to make is that even though I don't like or agree with certain things Lucas has done with SW, I don't let it consume me and spoil my enjoyment of the movies, no more than I let the flaws of other movies I love spoil my enjoyment of them.
Toryn, I'm sorry if people laugh at you for being a SW fan. I know what it's like, I really do. But I wasn't embarrassed back in the mid- to late-80s, when being a SW fan was just about the uncoolest thing you could be, and I'm not embarrassed now. I was proud to buy copies of the TPM DVD for three of my friends (all of them adults, and all of them SW fans who loved TPM; one of them actually became a SW fan because of TPM) for Christmas, and I am proud to defend it to people who say it's "garbage." I do not think the movie is juvenile, although it did have some juvenile elements (as did the OT).
IMO, it has become "cool" to dis SW and to (over)praise other media-anointed "hip" movies like LOTR and "The Matrix." E! Online is not an objective news source; it named TPM the worst sequel of all time, and gets in digs at SW whenever it can, all the while justifying its nastiness by saying it's "not getting caught up in the hype" (though it gladly gets caught up in the hype of just about everything else). Of course it's going to blow this N'Sync controversy way out of proportion.

Thanks Shelley, it's nice to be here.
Toryn, Some friendly advice from a Star Wars fan who's been there, to put things in perspective. Remember, when all is said and done and it's 10 years since the release of TPM and Lucasfilm announces it is going to have special showings of the entire Star Wars Saga... the people that are teasing you now will be standing behind you in line saying that they've always loved Star Wars. Trust me! ;D

Correction to my above post--there is one TPM character who likes Jar Jar: Padme. Qui Gon tells Jar Jar he's "brainless" and speaks to him as one would speak to a dimwitted child; Obi Wan calls him a "pathetic lifeform" and takes joy in cruelly teasing him; Anakin speaks to him maybe twice and ignores him the rest of the time; but Padme smiles at Jar Jar's clownishness and speaks to him in a fond way. I think it's because he comes from her home planet and she feels a kinship with him.

I don't know if it's official word but I heard that N'Sync will not be appearing in the film after all. Their scene got cut. 8)

I personally don't care either way, but if the scene is cut, it will be one less controversy for people to get worked up about.

As of tomorrow (Jan. 16th), there will be four more months.
I'll turn 30 on May 13th, and I planned to go to DisneyWorld's annual Star Wars Weekends to celebrate...but I've heard that DisneyWorld may cancel them this year; tourism has declined sharply since the Sept. 11 attacks.
But still...this year marks the silver anniversary of the original movie, so DisneyWorld might not cancel the SW Weekends; they'll just tighten security.
